Athlone Town have recorded their best start to the season in 25 years, as they look to make it three wins on the bounce when they take on Limerick this Friday at Jackman Park.

Athlone Town FC has confirmed that former Irish Under 18 and Under 21 goalkeeper Alex O'Reilly has agreed terms with the club.

Athlone Town FC has slashed its admission prices for the coming season, in recognition of the difficult economic environment.

 

It will be a family affair at Athlone Town this season, after new manager Brendan Place made a last minute addition to the squad: his brother!

Stephen Place joins Athlone from Leinster Senior League side Glebe North, where he has been performing well.

Older brother Brendan feels that his younger brother can add something to the team: “He’s been doing well for Glebe north where he played as centre forward and is very strong in the air. He will give us options up front where we definitely need additions.

Managerial career: Athlone Town

Brendan Place was appointed manager of Athlone Town in advance of the 2009 season. A former player with the club, Place also had spells with Home Farm, Longford Town, Monaghan United and Gillingham. While at Gillingham, Place played under Damien Richardson, who is well known to all League of Ireland fans as ex-manager of Shamrock Rovers and Cork City.

After retiring from the game, Place moved quickly to gain coaching experience. He gained his UEFA B License and coached the Irish Under-17s and Under-19s. He also had a stint as manager of Malahide United in the Leinster Senior League.
