It will be a family affair at Athlone Town this season, after new manager Brendan Place made a last minute addition to the squad: his brother!

Stephen Place joins Athlone from Leinster Senior League side Glebe North, where he has been performing well.


Older brother Brendan feels that his younger brother can add something to the team: “He’s been doing well for Glebe north where he played as centre forward and is very strong in the air. He will give us options up front where we definitely need additions.

Playing career: Home Farm, Longford Town, Monaghan United, Athlone Town, Gillingham

Managerial career: Athlone Town

Brendan Place was appointed manager of Athlone Town in advance of the 2009 season. A former player with the club, Place also had spells with Home Farm, Longford Town, Monaghan United and Gillingham. While at Gillingham, Place played under Damien Richardson, who is well known to all League of Ireland fans as ex-manager of Shamrock Rovers and Cork City.

 

After retiring from the game, Place moved quickly to gain coaching experience. He gained his UEFA B License and coached the Irish Under-17s and Under-19s. He also had a stint as manager of Malahide United in the Leinster Senior League.

Dermot Lennon was appointed as manager of Athlone Town F.C. in July 2007, following the departure of Michael O'Connor. Lennon had previously served as Assistant Manager at the club during O'Connor's time in charge.

The club finished in 6th place during his first term in charge but slipped to 9th in the 2008 season.
