General Information

Galway was first represented in the League of Ireland in 1977, when Galway Rovers F.C. were elected to the league. The club changed its name to Galway United in 1982.

‘The Tribesmen’ missed-out on a league title by just two points in 1985-86 when Shamrock Rovers pipped them to the championship. However, the Galway men had their revenge on the Dubliners in 1990-91, when they beat Rovers in the FAI Cup final to take the trophy to Galway for the first time.
