Sporting Fingal was formed in 2007, originally with the intention of applying for membership of the new A Championship. However, when Kilkenny City made the decision to drop out of the League of Ireland First Division, Sporting Fingal were offered the chance to replace them.
The club enjoyed a remarkable season in 2009, winning the FAI Ford Cup and securing promotion to the Premier Division.
